How the Weighted Grade formula works
Weighted average across categories:
Overall grade = Σ(category score × category weight) / Σ(category weight)
Step-by-step calculation
- Multiply each category's score by its weight.
- Sum those weighted values across all categories.
- Sum the weights themselves (should total 100% if the syllabus is complete).
- Divide the total weighted score by the total weight to get the overall grade.
Worked example
Homework: 92% at 20% weight. Quizzes: 85% at 30% weight. Final exam: 78% at 50% weight. Weighted sum = (92×0.20) + (85×0.30) + (78×0.50) = 18.4 + 25.5 + 39 = 82.9%.
Frequently asked questions
What if my category weights don't add up to 100%?
The calculator divides by the total weight entered, so it still produces a correct proportional result even if your weights sum to something other than 100% — but double-check your syllabus, since a mismatch usually means a category is missing.
How is this different from a simple average?
A simple average treats every category equally. A weighted average reflects the fact that, for example, a final exam worth 50% of your grade should influence your overall grade far more than a 5%-weight homework category.
