GPA Calculator
Add each course's letter grade and credit hours to instantly calculate your GPA on a standard 4.0 scale. The calculator weights each grade by its credit hours, matching how most institutions compute GPA.
How the GPA formula works
GPA is a credit-weighted average of grade points:
GPA = Σ(grade points × credit hours) / Σ(credit hours)
Each letter grade maps to a standard grade point value (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, and so on), which is then multiplied by that course's credit hours before summing and dividing by total credit hours.
Step-by-step calculation
- Convert each letter grade to its grade-point value on the 4.0 scale.
- Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours to get quality points.
- Sum the quality points across all courses.
- Sum the total credit hours across all courses.
- Divide total quality points by total credit hours to get GPA.
Worked example
Three courses: an A (4.0) worth 4 credits, a B+ (3.3) worth 3 credits, and a B (3.0) worth 3 credits. Quality points = (4.0×4) + (3.3×3) + (3.0×3) = 16 + 9.9 + 9 = 34.9. Total credits = 10. GPA = 34.9 / 10 = 3.49.
Frequently asked questions
Does this work for a cumulative GPA across multiple semesters?
Yes — add every course from every semester you want included, along with its credit hours, and the calculator produces one credit-weighted cumulative GPA.
What if my school uses a different grading scale?
This calculator uses the standard US 4.0 scale. If your institution uses plus/minus grades differently or a different maximum scale, adjust the grade-point values accordingly before entering them.
Do pass/fail courses affect GPA?
Typically no — pass/fail courses are usually excluded from GPA calculations entirely, so leave them out of this calculator unless your institution weights them differently.
How do I calculate just one semester's GPA?
Only enter the courses from that semester. The calculator doesn't retain data between sessions, so each calculation is independent.
