How the Reading Goal formula works

A straightforward division across remaining time:

Pages per day = (Total pages − Pages read) / Days remaining

Step-by-step calculation

  1. Subtract pages already read from the book's total page count to find pages remaining.
  2. Count the number of days between today and your target finish date.
  3. Divide pages remaining by days remaining.

Worked example

A 400-page book, 80 pages already read, with 16 days until the target finish date: Pages per day = (400 − 80) / 16 = 320/16 = 20 pages per day.

Frequently asked questions

Should I include the target finish date itself in the day count?

It's a minor judgment call — including it gives one extra day's cushion. Either way works as long as you're consistent, since the difference is at most one day's worth of pages.
