How the GPA Goal formula works

Solving for the required term GPA:

Required term GPA = ( Target GPA × (Current credits + New credits) − Current GPA × Current credits ) / New credits

Step-by-step calculation

  1. Multiply your target cumulative GPA by your total credits after this term (current + new).
  2. Multiply your current GPA by your current credit hours to find quality points already earned.
  3. Subtract those existing quality points from the target total.
  4. Divide by this term's credit hours to find the GPA needed this term.

Worked example

Current GPA 3.2 across 60 credits, targeting a 3.4 cumulative GPA, taking 15 credits this term: Required term GPA = (3.4×75 − 3.2×60) / 15 = (255 − 192) / 15 = 4.2. Since 4.2 exceeds the 4.0 max, this target isn't reachable in one term — the calculator will flag that.

Frequently asked questions

What if the required GPA is above 4.0?

That means your target cumulative GPA can't be reached in a single term, even with a perfect 4.0 — the calculator will show the highest cumulative GPA actually achievable this term instead.

Does this work for GPA scales other than 4.0?

The math works the same way for any scale — just make sure to enter your current GPA, target GPA, and interpret the required term GPA against whatever maximum your school's scale uses.
