How the Employee Turnover Rate formula works

The turnover rate formula:

Turnover rate% = (Number of separations / Average number of employees) × 100

Step-by-step calculation

  1. Count how many employees left (voluntarily or involuntarily) during the period.
  2. Calculate average headcount during that period, typically (starting headcount + ending headcount) / 2.
  3. Divide separations by average headcount and multiply by 100.

Worked example

12 employees left during a year with an average headcount of 80: Turnover rate = (12 / 80) × 100 = 15%.

Frequently asked questions

What's considered a healthy turnover rate?

It varies significantly by industry — retail and food service often see turnover rates of 40-70%+ annually, while more stable industries like education or government often see single-digit to low-teens rates. Compare against your specific industry's benchmarks.

Should this include internal transfers or only people leaving the company?

Standard turnover calculations count only people who left the organization entirely — internal transfers or promotions to a different role within the same company aren't typically counted as turnover.
