Time Card Calculator
Enter hours worked for each day of the week and an hourly rate to get total hours, regular versus overtime hours, and total pay for the week.
How the Time Card formula works
Standard US overtime math (time-and-a-half beyond 40 hours/week):
Total hours = Σ daily hours Regular hours = min(Total hours, 40) Overtime hours = max(Total hours − 40, 0) Pay = Regular hours × rate + Overtime hours × rate × 1.5
Step-by-step calculation
- Sum the hours worked across all entered days to get total weekly hours.
- Cap regular hours at 40 for the week.
- Any hours beyond 40 count as overtime.
- Multiply regular hours by the hourly rate, and overtime hours by 1.5× the rate, then add them together.
Worked example
A week with 9 hours worked each weekday (45 total) at $22/hour: Regular = 40 hours × $22 = $880. Overtime = 5 hours × $33 (1.5× rate) = $165. Total pay = $1,045.
Frequently asked questions
Does overtime always start after 40 hours?
That's the standard US federal threshold (FLSA), but some states and countries use daily overtime thresholds or different multipliers — check your local labor law if you need this for actual payroll compliance.
Can I track hours across more or fewer than 7 days?
Add or remove day rows as needed — the calculator simply sums whatever daily entries you provide before applying the 40-hour overtime threshold.
How do I enter partial hours, like 7 hours 30 minutes?
Enter it as a decimal — 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5 hours, since 30 minutes is half of an hour.
