Cat Age Calculator
Enter your cat's age to convert it into human years using the commonly cited veterinary aging chart — cats age much faster than the old 'multiply by 7' myth suggests, especially in the first two years.
How the Cat Age formula works
The standard cat aging chart used by many veterinary sources:
Year 1 of a cat's life ≈ 15 human years Year 2 adds ≈ 9 more human years (total ≈ 24 at age 2) Each year after that adds ≈ 4 human years
Step-by-step calculation
- If the cat is 1 year old or younger, multiply its age by 15.
- If between 1 and 2 years old, take 15 plus 9 times the fraction of the second year completed.
- If older than 2, take 24 (the 2-year total) plus 4 times the number of years beyond 2.
Worked example
A 5-year-old cat: 24 (first two years) + 4 × (5−2) = 24 + 12 = 36 human years.
Frequently asked questions
Is 'multiply by 7' accurate for cats?
No — that's a popular myth. Cats mature much faster than humans in their first two years (reaching roughly human adult equivalency by age 1-2), then age more slowly afterward, which the multiply-by-7 rule doesn't capture at all.
Does this differ by breed?
Aging charts like this one are general averages — actual life expectancy and aging pace can vary somewhat by breed and individual health, but the standard chart is a widely accepted general reference.
