How the Stud formula works

Base stud count from spacing, plus extra for openings:

Base studs = ceil(Wall length × 12 / Spacing) + 1
Total studs = Base studs + (Openings × 2)

Each opening typically needs extra studs on both sides for the rough framing (king and jack studs), commonly approximated as 2 extra studs per opening for a rough estimate.

Step-by-step calculation

  1. Convert wall length to inches and divide by stud spacing (commonly 16 or 24 inches on-center), rounding up.
  2. Add 1 for the starting stud.
  3. Add roughly 2 extra studs for each door or window opening to account for the additional framing around it.

Worked example

A 20 ft wall with 16-inch spacing and 2 window openings: Base studs = ceil(20×12/16)+1 = 16. Total = 16 + (2×2) = 20 studs.

Frequently asked questions

What's standard stud spacing?

16 inches on-center is the most common spacing for residential wall framing, though 24-inch spacing is sometimes used with certain construction methods to reduce material costs.

Does this account for corner framing?

This gives a base estimate; corners typically need additional studs (often 2-3 extra per corner) for proper nailing surfaces, which isn't included in this simplified count — add those separately for a complete order.
