How the Steps to Miles formula works

Distance from steps and stride length:

Distance (ft) = Steps × Stride length (ft)
Miles = Distance (ft) / 5,280

Step-by-step calculation

  1. Multiply your total steps by your average stride length in feet.
  2. Divide by 5,280 (feet in a mile) to convert to miles.
  3. Multiply miles by 1.60934 to convert to kilometers, if needed.

Worked example

10,000 steps at a 2.5-foot stride length: Distance = 10,000 × 2.5 = 25,000 feet. Miles = 25,000 / 5,280 ≈ 4.73 miles.

Frequently asked questions

What's a typical stride length?

Roughly 2.2 to 2.5 feet is common for an average adult's walking stride, though it varies with height and pace — a common estimate is height (inches) × 0.413 for a walking stride length in inches.

Does running use the same stride length as walking?

No — running strides are typically longer than walking strides at the same height, so a step-to-distance conversion calibrated for walking will underestimate distance covered while running.
