How the Scientific Notation Converter formula works
Scientific notation expresses a number as a value between 1 and 10, multiplied by a power of 10:
Number = a × 10ᵇ, where 1 ≤ |a| < 10
Step-by-step calculation
- Move the decimal point until only one non-zero digit remains to its left.
- Count how many places the decimal point moved — that count is the exponent (positive if the original number was large, negative if it was a small decimal).
- Write the result as that adjusted number multiplied by 10 raised to the exponent.
Worked example
245,000 in scientific notation: move the decimal 5 places left → 2.45 × 10⁵. Converting 3.7 × 10⁻⁴ back to standard form: move the decimal 4 places left → 0.00037.
