Recipe Scaling Calculator
Enter your recipe's original serving size, your desired serving size, and each ingredient's quantity to instantly scale the whole recipe proportionally.
How the Recipe Scaling formula works
A single scaling factor applied to every ingredient:
Scale factor = Desired servings / Original servings Scaled quantity = Original quantity × Scale factor
Step-by-step calculation
- Divide the desired number of servings by the recipe's original number of servings to get a single scale factor.
- Multiply every ingredient's original quantity by that same scale factor.
Worked example
A recipe serving 4 scaled up to serve 10: scale factor = 10/4 = 2.5. An ingredient originally listed as 2 cups becomes 2 × 2.5 = 5 cups; 1 teaspoon becomes 2.5 teaspoons.
Frequently asked questions
Does scaling work perfectly for every ingredient?
For most ingredients, yes — but some things don't scale perfectly linearly, like leavening agents (baking soda/powder), spices, and cooking times, which often need smaller proportional adjustments or your own taste-testing at large scale changes.
How do I scale odd measurements like '2 3/4 cups'?
Enter the quantity as a decimal (2.75) for the cleanest scaling math, then convert the scaled decimal result back to the nearest practical fraction for measuring.
