How the Commute Cost formula works

Round-trip distance across all work days, converted to fuel cost:

Annual miles = One-way distance × 2 × Work days per year
Annual cost = (Annual miles / MPG) × Price per gallon

Step-by-step calculation

  1. Double the one-way distance to get a round-trip distance.
  2. Multiply by the number of work days per year for total annual commuting miles.
  3. Divide by your vehicle's MPG to find gallons used, then multiply by fuel price for annual cost.

Worked example

A 12-mile one-way commute, 240 work days/year, a car getting 30 MPG, at $3.50/gallon: Annual miles = 12×2×240 = 5,760. Gallons = 5,760/30 = 192. Annual cost = 192 × 3.50 = $672.

Frequently asked questions

Does this include other commuting costs besides fuel?

No — this calculates fuel cost only. Other costs like vehicle wear, maintenance, parking, and tolls add to the true total cost of commuting but aren't included in this estimate.

How could I reduce my calculated commute cost?

The biggest levers in this formula are distance, MPG, and days commuted — remote or hybrid work schedules, carpooling, or a more fuel-efficient vehicle all directly reduce the annual total this calculator produces.
