How the Ceiling Tile formula works
A coverage-based calculation:
Tiles needed = ceil( Room area / Tile area × (1 + Waste%) )

- Calculate the room's total area.
- Divide by a single tile's area (commonly 4 or 8 ft²).
- Increase by a waste percentage to account for cuts around the room's perimeter, then round up to a whole tile.
Worked example
A 15 ft × 12 ft room (180 ft²) using standard 2×2 ft (4 ft²) tiles, with 10% waste: Tiles = ceil(180/4 × 1.10) = ceil(49.5) = 50 tiles.
