How the BMR formula works
The Mifflin-St Jeor equation:
Men: BMR = 10×weight(kg) + 6.25×height(cm) − 5×age + 5 Women: BMR = 10×weight(kg) + 6.25×height(cm) − 5×age − 161
Step-by-step calculation
- Multiply weight in kilograms by 10.
- Multiply height in centimeters by 6.25 and add it.
- Subtract 5 times your age.
- Add 5 (for men) or subtract 161 (for women) to get BMR.
Worked example
A 28-year-old woman, 165 cm tall, weighing 60 kg: BMR = 10×60 + 6.25×165 − 5×28 − 161 = 600 + 1,031.25 − 140 − 161 ≈ 1,330 calories/day.

What's the difference between BMR and TDEE?
BMR is calories burned at complete rest with zero activity. TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) takes BMR and multiplies it by an activity factor to estimate actual daily calorie burn including movement and exercise — use the Calorie Calculator for that fuller picture.
Why does BMR decrease with age?
Metabolically active tissue (like muscle) tends to decrease with age while body composition shifts, which is part of why the formula subtracts a term proportional to age — though individual metabolic rates vary based on many factors beyond this general formula.
